Classic Hurricane Cocktail – Perfect for Mardi Gras
If you have ever been to Mardi Gras, you may have experienced first-hand what it means to party in Nawlins.
You may have taken in the sights along Bourbon St., Canal St., or meandered around the French Quarter or the Garden District and marveled at grand old oaks draped with the beautiful and mysterious Spanish Moss.
One’s eyes are filled to the brim with all of the colorful sights, the unique architecture, and, most of all, the hospitable and beautiful people.
Did you see all of the street performers? Or maybe you heard a doleful saxophone serenading late into the night. What was your favorite New Orleans moment?
The Hurricane Cocktail is the epitome of New Orleans.
Our take on the classic Hurricane is a great way to get your Mardi Gras on or stoke memories of a past adventure to New Orleans. The Hurricane is the epitome of New Orleans, at least we think so.
It is colorful with a soulful tropical feel. It is sweet but not too sweet, and don’t let its beauty fool you because this is a dangerously potent elixir.
It’s both familiar and new simultaneously, and it’s delicious. It’ll have you saying, “Bartender, may I have another?!”
When is Mardi Gras 2023?
Cheers to a fun celebration! Mardi Gras is on Tuesday, March 1st, 2023. Rumor has it that the Hurricane Cocktail was created in New Orleans at the legendary Pat O’Brien’s Bar in the 1940s.
However, I can’t say for sure. But I can say that our version of this classic Mardi Gras drink is fabulous! It is. Trust me, you’ll like it! It’s phenomenal.
I fell in love with so many of the signature dishes of New Orleans, like; jambalaya, gumbo, red beans, and rice, Po boy sandwiches, and Bananas Foster.
And who can resist those deliciously light and fluffy beignets dusted with powdered sugar?
Not I. I need to stop because I am making myself hungry.
But, until I get myself back to New Orleans, I will mix up a batch of Hurricanes and pretend to be King for the day.
So, go ahead and get yourself some Lagniappe too. Cheers!
Ingredients For A Classic Hurricane
Rum. I used two varieties of rum for this hurricane cocktail. We used Don Q coconut rum and Kila Kai spiced rum. These two rums ramped up the flavor!
Mango passion fruit juice. The juice adds a nice sweetness to the cocktail, offering that tropical flavor. It reminds you of sipping a cocktail on the beach.
Simple Syrup. Simple syrup is straightforward to make, but you can buy it at your grocery store to make cocktails.
Lime Juice. Squeeze some fresh lime juice to help be the acidic component to balance the mixture’s booze and sweetness.
Cherries and Cherry Juice. So I used Maker’s Mark cherries, but if you can’t find these, just classic maraschino cherries work.
What fruit is in a Hurricane?
Passion fruit is the stand-out common juice to use when making a hurricane. This uses mango, but trust me; the mango enhances the flavor even more.
What If I Can’t Find Mango Passion Fruit Juice?
If you can’t find the mango passion fruit, swap it with orange juice and add some passion fruit juice. You will be able to find both of these at the grocery store.
Another swap could even be a Hawaiian punch!
