Whiskey Sunset Cocktail
We’re serving up the very best whiskey cocktails to enjoy all by your lonesome or with friends and family members of a certain age. This cocktail is undoubtedly a fancy pants kind of drink, and that’s okay because it’ll give you a chance to show off your newly acquired mixology skills.
I love whiskey cocktails because I love whiskey; pretty straight forward, right? But what I love even better is converting folks who claim they don’t like whiskey over to the dark side. Many people think whiskey has to be enjoyed neat or on the rocks, and of course, whiskey purists would readily agree. But for me, it’s about how I can broaden the whiskey drinking experience and make whiskey more accessible to a broader audience. The whiskey cocktail is the perfect brand ambassador to accomplish my goal of spreading the gospel of whiskey and convert the masses.
What You’ll Need To Make This Cocktail:
Single Malt Whiskey. The definition of single malt whiskey is a whiskey produced at a single distillery and made from malted barley and is a minimum of 40% APV, and aged for three years in American or Spanish oak casks; a cask is just a fancy way of saying barrel. There’s a lot of single malt whiskeys out there, I used New Holland’s Single Malt Whiskey aged in sherry casks, but that’s just me repping Michigan. The best Speyside (Scottland) region traditional varieties include Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, and Macallan. I am also partial to Balvenie and Dalmore as well.
Hurricane Mix. This ingredient is a great cheat to get a whole lot of citrus flavor into your cocktail with minimal effort, and it’s relatively inexpensive. Pick some up at your local liquor store or order online.
Orange Bitters. Successful cocktails are a balance of sweet and bitter, and orange bitters are a blend of orange peels, caraway seed, and coriander; and they’re also pretty impressive in whiskey drinks. I use Angostura orange bitters, and I ordering online is how I do it.
Blood Orange Syrup. A little bit of blood orange syrup is what it sounds like; a sweet blood orange-flavored syrup, and I love its deep red color. Although blood orange syrup seems rare and exotic it’s pretty easy to find, I am a fan of getting my home bar supplies online because they’re no crowds, but you should be able able to pick some up at your local liquor store.
Fentiman’s Pink Ginger Soda. I love everything about Fentiman’s products because they’re good quality English sodas, and they’re so versatile to work with, plus I love the fancy little bottles they come in because of those bottles my home bar looks legit.
Ice. I love large-block ice in this cocktail, but use whatever ice you can get your hands on, bag ice, ice tray ice, pebble ice, or crushed ice will all work well.
Rosemary. Fresh herbs are an easy way to dress up a cocktail; I grabbed rosemary out of the garden for this little bit of greenery. Feel free to use fresh rosemary, thyme, or even mint to jazz up your homemade cocktails.
