The Adventures of Rockford T. Honeypot Snack Board
When’s the last time you read a book so good, you had to finish it the same night! This was me when I was younger. I loved to read and would stay up until the wee hours of the morning to finish a book. When the book is good, you keep reading until the very last sentence. Now that’s a good book! Both Derrick and I love to read, so it was important for us to instill the same enthusiasm about reading with the boys. One of the twins caught the bug of reading at an early age and was reading 2-3 grades above his reading level.
When a book is good
It’s been a while since I’ve had time to read, but recently I had the opportunity to check out a new children’s book on the market, The Adventures of Rockford T. Honeypot. Authored by Josh Gottsegen, this book is all about adventure and going after your dreams. Gottsegen shares a reminder in this book about reading being an adventure. “Being alone never bothered me; a reader is never alone.” This statement is 100% accurate. When you pick up a book, you get lost in the pages. You fall in love with the characters and root for them. Sometimes I’m so worried about the character; I’m tempted to skip to the end to see how it turns out. This is the kind of book I love to read. While this may be a book marketed to kids and tweens, it’s a book for anyone who loves a good adventure.
Synopsis of The Adventures of Rockford T. Honeypot
As a young chipmunk, shy, bookish Rockford T. Honeypot had dreams of thrilling adventures across the forest. However, timid of danger and germs, his only adventures were found in books and in his imagination. When his family abandons him after a mistake that destroys their hazelnut business, Rockford sets off on a legendary journey beyond his wildest dreams. From exploring cuisines with a famous chef, training with ancient warrior monks, flying on giant hawks, finding true love, and much more, Rockford recounts his epic origin story of hardship, perseverance, and fortune.
My thoughts
The setting of the story starts deep in the forest. Right away, the way the storyline is set is fantastic. It grabs the attention of the reader right away. I love how there are small illustrations throughout the book too. They are black and white, so your reader can still develop their imagination of what’s happening throughout the book. Many people dream of the adventures they will take, but Rockford T. Honeypot wants to take adventures. He spends his time dreaming of those thrilling adventures.
After a mistake destroys his family’s hazelnut business, Rockford is left on his own. Once he is on his own, things change for him. This is when he now decided it’s time to take a journey. Of course, this journey starts and ends as he would never imagine.
While you’re reading this book that’s all about adventure and never giving up, here are a few snack ideas to enjoy! One of our favorite pastimes with the boys was preparing snacks while reading. When possible, we would attempt to make the food mentioned in the book. In The Adventures of Rockford T. Honeypot, hazelnuts are among the main staples of food found around the forest.
Let’s talk about the Nutty Nuts
Rockford created a roasted nut mix called Nutty Nuts. The Nutty Nuts were a huge success that came from an accident at Eve’s restaurant. Sometimes in life, we make mistakes. We think that’s the end of it. But that mistake often proves to be a huge success. And was just that success that Rockford needed as a confirmation that he was on the right path.
“In all my years surrounded by hazelnuts, I’d never seen them look quite like this. It was unique, transformed. Darker, yet more tender. I’ll never forget taking that first bite. As Eve would say, ‘it had an entirely different flavor profile.’ It was rich, buttery, smooth, and left an aftertaste that made me crave another!”

- Nutty Nuts (grab the recipe here)
- Fresh Fruit – apple slices, strawberries, grapes
- Themed iced sugar cookies
- A glass of milk (or other beverage of choice)
We also decorated the board with purple Amethyst Stones, kind of like the ones Rockford’s mom gave him. “Beauty is everywhere,” she said, pinching my cheeks. Sometimes you just need to look from a different angle. Live long and blossom, Captain Rockford T.”
For the iced sugar cookies, you can find a sugar cookie recipe on Pinterest. We took the colors and font from the characters seen on the book’s website to design the cookies.
If you are looking to plan a themed party based on The Adventures of Rockford T. Honeypot, here are a few ideas you can try.
There are no official themed party supplies for Rockford T. Honeypot just yet, but you can decorate with the colors.

At the end of Rockford’s journey, he’s able to look back and see everything he’s learned. One of my favorite lessons from this book is the perseverance from Rockford. He went through it, but in the end, he came out on top. I also love how he went from this boy who loved to read about adventures to taking the adventures! I would encourage you to read this book with your kids. Let them go on a big adventure with Rockford T. Honeypot (order here). At the end of this book, he is bound to teach them a thing or two!
