Set the table this holiday season using our red + green Christmas table setting idea. It’s festive, filled with a variety of Christmas trees and it’s easy to put together.
Red + Green Christmas Table Setting
It’s one of my favorite times of the year! The last few Christmas seasons I’ve seemed to struggle to get into the mood- the spirt of Christmas. I’m sure it has a lot to do with my parents and Grandma no longer being here, especially my Grandma. She was the definition of Christmas, and this is where I picked up the spirt of Christmas. Giving to others, thoroughly enjoying the season, and of course, the food. My grandma had special dinnerware she used for the holidays, and I’ve shared it in my Winter Wonderland Tablescape idea.
I’ve also felt stuck with no direction on how I would decorate this year. One of the ways I look for creativity is exploring my favorite home stores. Sometimes it just takes a cloth napkin, a plate, super cool spoon or some other decor item I see to give me the spark I need. While out browsing, I came across these plaid Christmas tree plates and the ceramic Christmas tree design plates. Once I saw those, an idea started to form to go with a Christmas Tree theme.
When I started out doing table settings, I had interesting ideas on how to set a table. When I look at those photos now, I cringe and say, “what was I thinking?” LOL I still feel like my designs have a ways to go, but I enjoy stretching myself and thinking outside the box. {You can see some of my older tablescapes here: THANKSGIVING TABLE DECOR IDEA, BLACK & WHITE TABLE DECOR IDEA, EASY EASTER TABLE DECOR IDEA, WINTER WONDERLAND PARTY DECOR IDEAS}
Here’s how I set up this red + green Christmas table setting:
First, I started with the centerpiece. I’ve talked about this before, but you don’t always have to start out in the middle of the table. Since I knew I was using a fresh greenery as a garland, I started in the middle. After picking up a roll of greenery from my local market, Horrock’s, I came home and measured a piece the length of my dining room table. This is my first season using this dining room table picked up from a boutique in the Grand Rapids area, The Found Cottage. I remember when Derrick and I first laid on this table, we fell in love.
After I laid the garland across the table, I added Green Ombre Bottle Brush Trees in a variety of sizes across the table. I also added taper candlestick and cream candle sticks.
Setting the table
If I am hosting a big dinner party, I usually go for a simple design, and honestly, use paper products. That’s one thing I love about Chinet products– they look real, but can be tossed in the trash once you’re finished. When we are entertaining for smaller parties, or I want the hassle of all the dishes, I like to add layers of plates.
Here’s how I set the table in this order:
- Start with a round red placemat.
- Next add a white charger, followed by a Christmas cloth napkin. Since I am working with a Christmas Tree theme, I use napkins to compliment this theme.
- I add my ceramic Christmas tree plate next, followed by the plaid Christmas tree appetizer plate.
- Add your glassware.
- Finally add your silverware: forks on the left of the plate, knives and spoons on the right.
- I went back and added a few Christmas tree candles throughout the table.
Derrick wasn’t a fan of the plaid Christmas tree appetizer plate on top of the other plates. So, if you’re not a fan of that look, you can always leave them off. I love the layered look, so they work just fine for me. For an added Christmas touch, I cut a piece of green velvet ribbon and placed one horizontally on each chair.
Pro-tip: When you’re working on a holiday tablescape and you’re using a theme, start prepping for this theme ahead of time. I may collect items for a particular table setting a few months prior to actually using them. When I’m out and I see a little item or appetizer plates that will go perfect with my idea, I grab them. Sometimes I have no idea on how I will use a particular item in a tablescape, but it is better to have it, just in case.
Another tip I have when it comes to entertaining is use your grocery stores as a resource. During the holidays, the grocery stores will have an abundant amount of dessert ideas. If you don’t have time to make a Chocolate Pie With Toasted Meringue, including no-bake dessert ideas, you can always find some good desserts at your grocery store.
Regardless of how I feel, putting together a tablescape brings a smile to my face. Christmas is a beautiful holiday, and knowing the values instilled in me from my parents and Grandma, I can carry on and do the same with my family. Are you hosting this year? How do you plan to decorate your space? Hopefully this fun Christmas Tree themed table setting has given you some inspiration!
