How To Make Halloween Witch Fingers Using Pretzel Sticks
Pretzel rods, candy melts, thinly sliced slivered almonds and food coloring are all this Halloween recipe requires.
Whip these up with your kids, and serve up one tasty snack.
The hardest thing is waiting for the chocolate to set up.
What You Need
Pretzel Rods. Head to your local store and grab some pretzel rods. I find the longer and thicker rods work great for giving these witch fingers a great look. Feel free to make as few or as many as you would like!
Candy Melts. I bought white candy melts that I colored with food coloring. You can also purchase green candy melts and eliminate coloring the chocolate yourself. The choice is up to you.
Sliced Almonds. Reach for slivered almonds. This will give you the perfect nail look when you use black food coloring to create a spooky look.
Can I Use White Chocolate Chips In Replace of Candy Melts
You will find that when you try to add food coloring to white chocolate chips, it will seize up the chocolate.
It is best to buy candy melts that are already colored or will work with the food coloring you use.
Tips For Dipping Pretzels in Melted Chocolate
- Tap off the excess chocolate so it doesn’t run and drip when you go to lay it down.
- Place your dipped pretzels on wax or parchment paper. This will help prevent sticking.
- Make sure to place your colored almond on the top of the rod while the chocolate is still wet, as the candy melts set up fast. Otherwise, they won’t stick well.
- Use a toothpick to carve out knuckles; it transforms the look.
- You have to use gel food coloring, or the mixing of the chocolate will not work.
Can I Make These In Advance
If you are looking to make these for a party, packing in your child’s lunch, or a fun dessert after dinner, go ahead and make them a day or two in advance.
Store your dipped pretzels in an airtight container.
The pretzels need to be stored at room temperature; if it is too hot in your home, place them in the fridge to prevent melting.
If you would like, you can make these a day or two in advance.
Then place them on a platter or in a display container for Halloween.
Can You Freeze Dipped Pretzels
Go ahead and toss any pretzels you don’t plan to eat right away in the freezer.
Place a layer of wax paper between the pretzels if you stack them. This will prevent sticking.
You can freeze the pretzels for up to three months.
When you’re ready to have a few, thaw on the counter.
They are a great snack to keep in the fridge when you crave a salty-sweet snack.
Everything you need to make Halloween Witch Fingers
Ingredients
- 10 pretzel rods
- 8 oz bright white candy melts
- 20 pieces of sliced almond
- Gel Food Coloring: Green and Black
Directions:
- Preheat your oven to 400F. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper.
- In a small bowl, combine 1/8 tsp of black gel food coloring with a few drops of water and stir to dissolve the food color.
- Add the almonds to the bowl and stir until they are black on all sides. Transfer them to the parchment-lined sheet pan (make sure they are in an even layer) and bake for 5 minutes.
- Next, break the pretzel rods in half to have 20 ~4″ rods.
- Melt the candy melts according to the package directions (typically, you’ll melt them in a microwave-safe bowl at 50% power and stir them every 30 seconds).
- Once the candy melts have fully melted, add 1/4 tsp of green food coloring. If you’d like a brighter color, add another 1/4 tsp and stir. Continue until you get the color you want.
- Dip each pretzel rod into the green candy melts and tap it on the side of the bowl to allow any excess chocolate to drip off.
- While the chocolate is still soft, place an almond on the tip of the pretzel. Make sure to put the pointed end of the almond upward so it looks like a nail.
- Next, use a toothpick to draw three small lines below the nail and three little lines above where the chocolate dip ends. This will make the pretzel rod genuinely look like a finger! (Note: See photo above for exact placement if you are unsure.)
Tips For Success:
- You must use gel food color in this recipe, as the liquid can change the consistency of the candy melts.
- I used Wilton Gel Colors in Black (for the almonds), Juniper Green, and Kelly Green (a 50/50 mix for the pretzels).
- This recipe can use tempered white chocolate, although it is difficult to melt properly.
- Candy melts are highly recommended.
- Do not add liquid if your candy melts seem too thick to dip.
- Add 1 tbsp of vegetable shortening, microwave for another 15 seconds, and then whisk to combine.
