What is a hot cocoa bomb?
A hot cocoa bomb is a chocolate-coated sphere filled with powder hot chocolate, marshmallows, and such.
It will melt when you pour warm milk over the ball in a mug, and the marshmallows and cocoa powder will rise to the top.
What ingredients are needed for this Galaxy drink?
Pink, purple, and blue candy melts. Candy melts are super easy to melt and remelt, making them ideal for colorful cocoa bombs.
Strawberry chocolate milk mix. I used Nesquik as it is the only one currently available in the strawberry flavor.
Sprinkles mix. Walmart carries Yummalo combinations of sprinkles that are a little more varied and interesting than the usual sprinkles found in the baking section. I used the unicorn mix for this one.
Mini marshmallows. Hot cocoa is not complete without mini marshmallows.
How to make:
Prep time: 20 minutes
Servings: 6
- ½ cup of pink candy melts
- ½ cup of blue candy melts
- ½ cup of purple candy melts
- 6 tbs Nesquik strawberry chocolate milk powder
- 6 tsp sprinkles mix
- Mini marshmallows
- Half sphere silicone mold
Directions:
- In three separate, microwave-safe bowls, melt the candy melts in 30-second increments, stirring in between. This will take 60-90 seconds.
- Once they are melted, spoon about ½ tbsp of each color into each half-sphere mold. Using the back of a spoon or a pastry brush, lightly swirl the colors together and spread them around the entire mold. Don’t swirl too much; just 3-4 swirls, or the colors will start blending, and there will not be a noticeable difference between each color. Let set in the fridge or freezer for about 6 minutes or until hardened. As a precaution, reinforce the top edges of each half-sphere with a bit of the remaining candy melt. Let it set for a minute until they are hardened again. Gently remove each half-sphere from the molds.
- In 6 half spheres, spoon 1 tbsp of the strawberry chocolate milk powder. Top with 1 tsp of sprinkles and several mini marshmallows.
- Place a small, microwave-safe plate into the microwave to heat for about 45 seconds. Place an empty half sphere onto the plate for a few seconds until the edges start to melt. Place the empty half onto the corresponding filled half, ensuring the edges meet all the way evenly around. Run a clean finger around the edge to clean up any excess candy melt. Repeat with the remaining five spheres until all of the cocoa bombs are assembled.
- To make hot cocoa, place a cocoa bomb in the bottom of a mug and top with 6 oz of hot milk or water. Once the shell has melted, stir well to emulsify.
- Serve immediately and enjoy!
Expert Tips
- Don’t be afraid to mix the colors a bit. It will create a one-of-a-kind design for your cocoa bombs. You can also change the colors of your candy melts if you like.
- Do a thin layer of chocolate when you are doing your sphere. Otherwise, it will not fully melt and release the marshmallows and powder in the mug.
- You can use warm water, milk, or a warm milk alternative to pour over the chocolate bombs to melt.
- Feel free to use chocolate chips instead of candy melts. The only thing with that is you have to temper your chocolate. Otherwise, it will not harden properly.
What is the texture of these cocoa bombs?
The sweet candy shell melts away under hot milk and releases strawberry chocolate milk, sprinkles, and mini marshmallows. After everything is stirred and well mixed, a sweet, smooth drink comes together.
How long do hot cocoa bombs last?
For up to two weeks, you will want to store your cocoa bombs at room temperature in an airtight container or sealable bag.
Or, if you wish, you can freeze them for up to 3-4 months.
You will want to thaw them before you use or the chocolate shell will not melt in the milk the way you want.
Can I use cocoa powder instead of strawberry milk powder?
If you are not a strawberry milk fan, go ahead and do a hot chocolate mix instead.
We wanted the drink to be colorful, just like the chocolate-coated shell. But feel free to change up the filling to whatever you want.
You can use a white chocolate cocoa mix, mint-flavored, caramel, and more. Feel free to look over the stores or even online and find the perfect drink filling.
How to Use Instant Pot As A Double Boiler
If you own an Instant Pot, you can use your pressure cooker as a double boiler.
This is a great way to melt chocolate.
Here is a simple way to use it for using your candy melts.
- Add 2 cups of water to the Instant Pot.
- Place a glass Instant Pot safe bowl in the Instant Pot, having the bowl sit above the water.
- Turn the saute feature on, and let the water warm up, making the bowl hot.
- Then toss in your candy melts and let them melt down.
You can also use a classic double boiler or microwave to melt your chocolate.
The pressure cooker method is just a different method.
