French Fries Board + Dip Ideas
Okay, it’s a fact that just about anyone with a mouthful of taste buds loves French fries, right? So wouldn’t you reckon that frying up a whole mess of potatoes in various forms would bring all the boys and girls to the yard? You’d think so!
Well, today just so happens to be National French Fry Day (July 13th)! Hooray! This means we get to spend what’s left of this 24-hours to love hungrily on French fries to our heart’s content! Now that doesn’t sound like a bad gig at all if you ask me. You did ask me, right?
Disclaimer. I also grabbed one of those big succulent green zucchinis (I shared in our Instagram stories) from our backyard family garden and whipped up some Beer Battered Zucchini Fries. The results were so good that we’ll make them again, again, and again.

What You Will Need To Make A French Fries Board
French French Fries. And when I say French fries, what I am saying is mostly potatoes (Russet, red potatoes, Yukon Gold, and sweet potatoes are our go-to choices) cut into whatever shape that brings your joy. But you can also go off the beaten path and fry up zucchini, snow peas, string beans, asparagus, and green onion. Just reminder to make sure whatever your frying up isn’t too big, keep whatever your frying about 1/4 inch in width, and you should be just fine.
For this board, I made homemade potatoes wedges using Yukon Gold potatoes, sweet potato fries, and zucchini fries (using the beer batter recipe posted below). I also purchased frozen store-bought crinkle-cut fries and waffle fries.
Beer Batter. For this recipe idea, I made an easy beer batter made with all-purpose flour, seasonings, an egg, and of course, beer. This particular batter works well for seafood, veggies, and chicken strips.
Seasonings. I used sea salt, freshly cracked black peppercorns, onion powder, and Old Bay seasoning.
Dips. When it comes to dips, go with whatever you and your crew like the best. We love having several to choose from like nacho cheese, ketchup, and avocado cream (recipe below).

Beer Batter Recipe for Homemade French Fries
(Enough for 1 pound of potatoes)
Ingredients:
- 1 cup + 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon Old Bay Seasoning
- 1 teaspoon freshly ground black peppercorns
- 1 egg
- 1 cup beer + 2 tablespoons (I prefer using a stout, a brown, or a doppelbock)
- 4 1/2 cups vegetable oil or other high smoke point oil like canola, avocado, corn, grapeseed or safflower
Directions:
- Cut potatoes in 1/4 inch thickness. Dip the potatoes into the batter and shake off excess batter, and fry in oil until golden brown. Sidebar: when frying potatoes in oil, the French fries will begin to rise to the surface when they’re done.
- Use a large slotted spoon to turn the French fries over to ensure that they are evenly brown. Remove and place onto a platter lined with a few paper towels to absorb excess oil. Add salt and pepper to taste.
- Place an assortment of dips onto a platter and place the French fries onto the platter.
- Serve.
French Dip idea: Avocado Creama
Ingredients:
- 2 avocados
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 4 tablespoons chopped cilantro
- 1/2 lime freshly squeezed juice
- 1/2 teaspoon chili lime seasoning
- sea salt and freshly cracked black peppercorns to taste
Directions:
- Into a food processor, add avocados, sour cream, EVOO, chopped cilantro, freshly squeezed lime juice, chili lime seasoning, and sea salt + freshly cracked black peppercorns to taste.
- Blend on high until the mixture is smooth.
- Serve.
