One of our favorite family traditions during the holidays is to all pile up on the sofa with snacks and steaming cups of hot cocoa in our favorite Santa mugs.
We’re sharing our themed hot chocolate recipes to pair with our favorite Christmas movies.
Polar Express Hot Cocoa
The Polar Express is another one of our favorite movies to watch. When the boys were little, one of our favorite Christmas books to read in the evening was The Polar Express.
And did you know the author of the book, The Polar Express, grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where the main characters (and Billy’s) lived? And it’s the only city mentioned in the book and movie.
This is one of the reasons why we love The Polar Express. And it’s a great wholesome, family movie.
Our hot, hot, hot, we got it hot chocolate is a decadent one!
Our Polar Express hot chocolate is made with cardamom and dark chocolate with a hint of cinnamon.
Polar Express Hot Chocolate Recipe
- 1 cup of half and half
- ½ cup of hot chocolate mix
- 2 tbsps of dark chocolate syrup
- ⅛ tsp of ground cinnamon
- ⅛ tsp of ground cardamom
- cold milk foam
Directions:
- Place a pot over med-high heat. Add half and half, hot chocolate mix, dark chocolate syrup, ground cardamom, and cinnamon.
- Stir with a wire whisk. Heat until the mixture begins to boil, remove from heat and pour into a serving mug.
- Top with cold dairy or non-dairy milk foam.
- Serve.
Elf Hot Cocoa
The holiday season is not complete if it doesn’t include watching Elf.
We’re taking our cues from Elf on this one. Our hot chocolate recipe includes the world’s best coffee, maple syrup, and candy sprinkles.
Elf (Hot Chocolate Coffee)

- 1 package hot chocolate mix
- ½ cup cold brewed coffee or coffee of choice (omit when serving to kids)

- Heat until the mixture begins to boil, remove from heat and pour into a serving mug.
- Top with peppermint-flavored or regular whipped cream. Add festive sprinkles.
- Serve.
The Grinch Hot Chocolate
We’re serving up a mean Grinch Hot Chocolate. This green hot chocolate is perfect for serving while watching Dr. Suess’ The Grinch this holiday season.
The Grinch Green Hot Chocolate includes a scoop of Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream, hot white chocolate mix, and festive sprinkles.

Home Alone 1 and Home Alone 2 are at the top of our Christmas movie list. And thankfully, it is streaming on-demand on DIRECTV.
As a kid, I enjoyed watching the Home Alone movies during the holiday season. One of my favorite gifts as a kid was receiving a Home Alone handheld game system from my grandma.
We’re taking our cue from Kevin when he talked about eating junk and watching rubbish for this hot chocolate recipe.

We’re throwing it back to the ’80s for this Christmas movie, but it’s a classic and probably our #1 must-watch movie during the holidays.
