Can You Color White Chocolate with Food Coloring
Most white chocolate will seize up if you add food coloring to it. I have found Wilton Gel food coloring is the best food coloring to use if you try to melt and color the chocolate. Whisk constantly to ensure the color can incorporate.
What are Candy Melts
Candy melts are a colored candy that is similar to white chocolate. You can find tons of colors, which makes these tie-dye bowls a breeze. You can buy these candy melts at the grocery store or shop online and ship them to your door.
Why Should You Use Candy Melts For Making Candy Bowl
Candy melts set up nice and hard in minutes. So all you do is melt the chocolate in the microwave or a double boiler. Then use the candy melts as you would like. Once it begins to set up, it takes minutes. So, this is excellent melting chocolate to use for all types of desserts.
Can I use white chocolate and add food gel?
You could, yes, but the candy melts are made to be melted so that the consistency will be a little smoother.
Helpful Tips For Making A Chocolate Bowl
Temperature of Chocolate
Make sure that you are not using super hot chocolate. Otherwise, the balloon can pop and make a mess. Once the chocolate is melted, let it cool for a bit, then dip.
Colors of Candy Melts
Have fun and use different colors of candy melts. You can do all different colors of pinks and purples, or blue and green. Or do a mix of colors like I did. Just make sure to use white chips along with the other colors.
Alternative to Coconut Oil
Reach for a shortening to replace the coconut oil if you would like. Use the same amount of shortening to replace the coconut oil in the recipe. This is going to help the chocolate set up nice and hard.
Thickness of Chocolate
Make sure that your chocolate is thick enough that it will hold up once the balloon is removed. Dipping in the chocolate a few times helps build up the chocolate and create a thicker layer of chocolate.
Tips on using balloons to make chocolate bowls:
Can I use water balloons instead of regular balloons?
Yes, you can, but keep in mind water balloons may be harder to blow up. You also want to use smaller balloons for this dessert idea, as they work best.
Even though you can use an alternative to coconut oil, as we shared above, coconut oil helps the smooth consistency of the chocolate and helps keep it from hardening up quickly.
Can I keep the balloons in the freezer or refrigerator overnight?
You sure can! I did, and they didn’t pop at all.
