Easy Recipe for Caramelized Apple and Onion Grits Crostini
Are you a fan of Grits? I love Grits, but only considered them as a breakfast hot cereal item. However, my views have now changed…. because of this recipe! If you have plans to host a game day party, super bowl or just need an easy appetizer, then these Crostinis will be perfect for your party! With just 13 ingredients (and you probably have most of these on hand), you will be able to pull of this easy appetizer recipe for Caramelized Apple and Onion Grits Crostini!

Ingredients for Caramelized Apple and Onion Grits Crostini
- 2 teas. Oil
- 1 medium Onion, thinly sliced
- 2 small Apples, cored, sliced
- ¼ cup uncooked grits
- 1 ¼ cups water
- ½ cup AP Flour
- 2 teas. Sugar
- 1/8 teas. Salt
- ½ Cup Milk
- 2 Tbsp. Butter, melted
- 1 Egg
- 4 oz. Smoked Gouda, shredded
- Minced Thyme for garnish
Instructions for Caramelized Apple and Onion Grits Crostini
In a skillet over medium high heat add the Oil and Onion, sauté until the onion is soft and beginning to
brown, 5-8 minutes.
Add in the Apple slices and reduce to medium heat. Toss frequently until the onions are caramelized
and the apples are slightly caramelized, 8-10 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
In a small sauce pan bring the water to a boil, slowly stir in the Grits reduce heat to a simmer and stir
occasionally until thick, 5-8 minutes. Set aside and let cool.
Preheat oven to 400˚.
In a bowl combine the Flour, Sugar and Salt. Make a well in the middle and add the Milk, Butter and
Egg. Whisk to combine. Whisk in the cooled Grits breaking up any lumps.
Spray two 12 cup muffin tins with cooking spray. Add 1 tablespoon of batter to each cup. Bake at 400˚
until brown and crispy on the edges, 13-15 minutes. Remove to wire rack to cool. Reduce oven to 350˚
Place crostinis on a baking sheet, place a small amount of cheese on top of each, followed by a small
amount of onion, apple slice and just a little bit more cheese.
Bake at 350˚ until the cheese starts to brown, about 8 minutes.
Garnish with Thyme and serve hot.

Interesting recipe! I love grits and actually have been experimenting with grits cakes and was having trouble getting it to stick together, so I will try your method, thanks! The apple is unexpected and I bet delicious~
