It’s Shark Week! Not familiar with Shark Week? “Shark Week is an annual, week-long programming block on the Discovery Channel, which normally takes place in July or August. The show originally aired on July 17, 1988, and it’s the longest-running cable television event in history and has enjoyed a surge in popularity over the past few years.” {source}
Shark Week 2022
Shark Week for this year starts on July 24th – July 31st.
I’ve always been fascinated by sharks and killer whales. Something about how powerful and gorgeous these creatures are always interested me, and I could spend hours watching documentaries and movies about sharks.
I can’t tell you how many times I have watched the Jaws series.
Over the years, the popularity of Shark Week has grown to become a huge annual event, including people hosting viewing parties, drinking games, themed food and drinks, and more.
If you’re planning on hosting a party or the kids want to partake in shark week, here’s a fun shark kid-friendly drink to try.
We start with 1 ounce of Strawberry syrup. adding ice to tall glasses like the ones mentioned here.
Then add ice to tall glasses like the ones we used here
Next, add 4-ounces of Lemon-Lime Soda.
Add one tablespoon of fresh lemon juice, then top with one ounce of blue curacao.
If you’re making this drink for kids, you can substitute blue Curacao for blue kool-aid or the Torani blue Curacoa version (which does not have alcohol in it).
This drink is always best to make in front of the kids, so they can watch the color changes happen.
They will think it’s pretty cool.
Kid-Friendly Shark Week Drink
Ingredients:
- 1 ounce Strawberry syrup
- 1 ounce Blue Curacao (the Torani version does not have alcohol in it. Or if you’re uncomfortable using this, you can use blue kool-aid).
- 1 Tbsp Fresh Lemon Juice
- 4 ounces Lemon Lime Soda
- Ice
- Gummy sharks for garnish
If you want to make this adult-friendly, you can add in 1-2 ounces of vodka or tequila.
Directions:
- Add an ounce of strawberry syrup to a serving glass.
- Fill the serving glass halfway with ice.
- Pour the lemon-lime soda over the ice.
- Squeeze in a tablespoon of fresh lemon juice.
- Top with Blue Curacao.
- Garnish with small candy gummy sharks.
Serve. Drink responsibly, and never drink and drive
Note: When you’re ready to drink it, give it a little stir with your straw. If not, your first sip will be of the strawberry syrup.
Why did my colors mix when I poured them into the cup?
The key to a layered drink is to make sure you pour each ingredient in as mentioned in the recipe card.
Then you will want to slowly pour, so you don’t cause the colors to blend as you are pouring into the glass.
Do I have to have ice for this drink?
Yes, the ice is going to help act as a barrier to the colors of the blue and red in this drink.
If you don’t have ice, it won’t give you that defined color change and will blend together, and you won’t see the separate blue and red.
What can I use instead of blue curacao?
If you don’t want to use blue curacao, you have many options.
You can use a blue-colored Kool-aid you mix with water or a blue Gatorade or Powerade.
Another option is doing a lemon-lime soda and a few drops of blue food coloring into the glass; it will color the drink.
I find the food coloring doesn’t quite give you the best-defined color layers.
What to garnish the glass with?
You can purchase shark gummies to place on top of the glass for a fun look.
We found some shark gummies at our local grocery store, but you can order them online.
You can also use Swedish Fish gummies. Either will work and taste great as they nibble and sip on the drink.
Feel free to get creative.
Can I make a large batch of these drinks?
You can make as many or as few of this Shark Week drink as you would like.
Just make them in a glass so you can get each drink’s red and blue look.
If you pour in a pitcher, it won’t give you the same cool look.

This looks good, how could I amend the recipe to make a large punch bowl sized batch?

Thanks, Leigh! You would just need to double/tripe the recipe to the amount of people you plan to serve!
