Life Lessons We Can Learn from Alice Through The Looking Glass {& free printables}
We had a chance to check out the new Alice in Wonderland Through The Looking Glass movie earlier this week. Zayd’n loved it, and some of his favorite moments were all of the puns at Hatter’s Tea Party with Time, Time’s robots, and Time himself.
Short Synopsis of the movie:
Alice returns to Wonderland to find her best friend, Hatter, depressed, and dying. To save Hatter, Alice must travel back in time to rescue Hatter’s family from the evil Red Queen and Time.
I try to look for ways lessons and quotes from Through The Looking Glass, and how we can apply them to everyday life.
Life Lessons We Can Learn from Alice Through The Looking Glass:
Time. Time is a person. Many times we think we have all the time in the world, but the clock never stops moving. Time is a thief and a villain. Time is also a gift, and we should enjoy every minute of it. Every second. In the movie, Time is portrayed as a freakishly weird, but an interesting person. And of course, the puns about time are funny.
Family. The theme of family is present throughout the movie. We are reminded of the importance of the need for family. We only get one family, regardless of how different they may be. Families may fight or not understand each other, but at the end of the day, your family will be there for you. {spoiler} At the beginning of the movie, Alice finds out her Mom’s house is now in the hands of one of the thorns in her side, Hamish. She is upset with her mother for doing this and not having the gut to stand up for herself. At the end of the movie, Alice’s Mother stands up to Hamish to support her daughter. Instead of signing the deed, Alice’s Mother rips it up, and they both walk together to create their own company. This is just a reminder to me when you work together with your family; anything is possible.
Anything is possible. “To achieve the impossible believe it is possible.” This quote at the beginning of the movie stuck out to me. Alice’s crew was telling her it was impossible to maneuver the ship across the storm and outwit the enemy gaining on him, and Alice turned to him and said it was possible. Many times we look at things in our lives and say, “nope, we can’t do it!” However, how do we know if we don’t try? And, when you can do six impossible things before breakfast, well, that’s winning in my book!
You can’t change the past. In the movie, Time kept telling Alice she would not be able to go back and change the time and what happened to Hatter’s parents. However, Alice didn’t believe him until she tried to change the past and realized it didn’t work. This is a reminder to all of us about the past. We cannot fix or change the issues and mistakes of our past. However, we can make changes to change our future.
Dreams. At the end of the movie, Alice tells Hatter, “But a dream is not reality.” The Mad Hatter looks at her and says, “But who is to say which is which? Many times we have dreams which do turn into a reality. It reminds me of the dreams and goals I have in life. If I work hard, they can become a reality.
Always believe in your kids, no matter what. Mad Hatter’s Dad though the Hatter’s way of making hats was wrong, crazy, and not practical. He kept trying to correct Hatter’s characteristic and fashion sense, but it just pushed his son further away. In the end, he learned to love his son just the way he was and believe in his artistic abilities despite how different they were from others. This is just a reminder to us, parents. We should believe and support our kids, no matter how different their abilities and ideas.
Emotional moments. Throughout Alice Through The Looking Glass, we are engulfed with many touching moments. {spoiler} When Mad Hatter tries to convince Alice, his family is alive, but she doesn’t believe him. He grows mad and depressed, to the point of death because his grief is too strong. Towards the end, Alice has to say goodbye to her dear friends and hit them with the reality she is not coming back. It reminded me of my reality. With just losing my Dad last week, and my Mom two years ago, it was a reminder some things in life are certain and final.
My favorite quotes from Alice Through The Looking Glass:
- “I want to believe I can do six impossible things before breakfast.”
- “To achieve the impossible believe it is possible.”
- “Everything parts with everything eventually, my dear.” – Time
- “The only things worth doing are the things you do for others.”
- “You might not change the past, but you might learn something from it.”

Review: Overall, we loved the movie, and feel it is kid/family-friendly. The dialogue was kid-appropriate, and it was easy to follow. Even if you didn’t see the first movie nor read any of the books, you can still follow along and get the gist of the story.

Your website is great. I’ve been looking for the first part of the quote about dreams and am not finding it. Perhaps it was in the movie, but not the book? I remember the movie quote as HATTER: I’ll visit you in your dreams. ALICE: A dream is not reality. HATTER: But who’s to say which is which?
I found this exchange touching because my deceased husband has visited me in my dreams and they feel very real to me.
