How to make a red, white, and blue layered drink
1 serving
Ingredients needed:
- ice
- 1 can of Cherry 7-Up
- 1 oz of Grenadine
- 1/4 cup of Pina colada mix
- 1 cup of Blueberry Kool-Aid (you can also use blue Gatorade or Blue Hawaiian juice)
- Cherries for a garnish
Directions for your Captain America Kids Drink:
- Fill 1 large glass with ice.
- Pour the Cherry 7-UP with Grenadine 1/3 of the way full. ( Grenadine gives it the bright red color )
- Now add the Pina colada mix 1/3 of the glass. ( you are layering this )
- Top off with the Blueberry Kool-Aid. (or the blue drink of your choice)
- Garnish with a cherry, and use a Star and Stripes straw found at any craft store. (the straw is optional)
How to make your layered red, white, and blue drink:
Note: To successfully layer this drink, you will need a spoon.
- First, fill your glass of choice with ice.
- Next, fill about 1/3 of the cup with cherry soda and grenadine.
- Now, slightly angle your spoon down into the glass with the backside facing up. Slowly pour in the piña colada mix over the backside of the spoon and fill the glass about 1/3 of the way up.
- Using the same technique, slowly pour the blue Gatorade over the back of the spoon to finish off the layers.
- Garnish with a maraschino cherry and festive straw.
How does the drink stay in different layers of color?
The ice is key to keeping the red and the white layers from combining.
You will also angle your glass to help pour in nice and slow so the pina colada layer and blue layer do not run together.
It is really fun to create a fun layered drink.
What can I use instead of Kool-Aid for this layered drink?
Blue Gatorade is a great swap if you want.
You can even use a zero-sugar one if you want to reduce the sugar content in the layered 4th of July drink.
Do you mix layers when you go to drink?
You can stir the drink right before you sip to create a mixed drink or drink it with each layer.
We like to stir it up right before we drink.
The layers make a fun look of a drink, but for the best flavor, I recommend mixing the layers so you get things incorporated.

This is the perfect drink for a party.
If you don’t want to whip up a classic party punch, go ahead and make up these drinks.
Just assemble them and let all the guests grab and sip on this Captain America drink.
Where to buy paper straws?
These paper straws are found at craft stores, Dollar Tree, Walmart, and more.
You will find that there are tons of colors and designs.
Or if you don’t live near a store that carries them shop online at Amazon.
They are a great way to dress up a drink in seconds.

I couldn’t get this to look much like the photo! The pinacolada mix went straight down in the glass, not up the way it looks in the photo as there are streaks of white in the blue. The blue koolaid also went down as I was pouring it and covered the white as it pushed the white down further. I tried to pour as slowly as I could. I don’t know how I could have achieved the look in the photo. And the pinacolada mix I bought, in a can, was not white, it was sort of off-white. At least it tasted good!

Mine did the same and then the whole drink turned purple… kids still loved it

Kelli says
I’d like to make a big batch of this and put it in a large beverage dispenser, but of course, I’d like to keep the colors as separate as possible. Does anybody have any tips or tricks for doing this? Thanks!
T Worthey says
Hi Kelli- it is challenging to keep the colors separate once you mix them all. We had to move quickly to get the photos of it. One option you could try with layering and keeping the colors is a frozen slush type. Mix each color/flavor with ice then layer it that way.
Kelli says
Ooo! I like the idea of making it sort of a slushie drink. I think I’ll just go the extra step with the pina colada mix and make virgin coladas and hopefully, the slushie middle can kinda keep things separate. Thanks so much!

Hello I am going to make this drink for a fellowship night at church in July and I was wondering if I could use plastic cups? Cause there is a lot of people at church and how do I keep the layers of red white and blue? Like would I put ice at the bottom with the red drink and then make the pina colada like a slushy and the put ice aat the top with the blue drink???
T Worthey says
Hi Carrie,
Yes, you can make them in plastic cups. The ice is key to keeping the red and the white layers from combining.
You will also angle your glass to help pour in nice and slow so the pina colada layer and blue layer do not run together.
However, if the drink sits for quite a bit of time, the layers will start to combine. But your last question/suggestion is definitely one you can try to see if the layers will stay that way.
Kathy The FUN Baker says
I love the idea of this patriotic drink. I will take your advice & go with the slushie suggestion to help keep the layers from mixing at least until the drinks are served. I know this recipe is intended for kiddos, but I plan to serve it to adults at a local library Recipe Swap in July with the Red, White & Blue theme!! It sounds yummy to me, but I will make a couple of changes. Since I want to avoid red dye #40, I will skip the grenadine syrup & use cranberry-pineapple juice cocktail instead with a little lemon-lime soda added for bubbly fun. Most pina colada mixes I found have no juice at all in them so I’m going to make my own mix with coconut milk & Simply Tropical Pineapple-Mango juice drink. This will be a real treat for us as we usually just drink plain water at most of our gatherings! Thank you for sharing this tasty recipe! Happy Cooking! xox
