This year, we created an outdoor Christmas theme for The W- our backyard living space for the first time. See how we put this Christmas Patio Decor idea together and get inspired to create something magical in your backyard or front porch.
Christmas at The W | Christmas Patio Decor
It’s the most wonderful time of the year! ‘Tis the season for all things holly and jolly! When we created our backyard living space this summer, I had visions of sugar plums dancing around this space during the holiday season. Okay, maybe not, but I knew I wanted to decorate The W (the name of our outdoor living space) for every single season, including Christmas.
Christmas in July decor idea.
After creating a Christmas in July theme, I knew it would be a challenge coming up with a look for the holiday season that could withstand the cold and snowy elements.
Most of the furniture for the backyard is in storage, which gave me more room to decorate.
I decided to focus mostly on one area of the backyard: our small deck and the steps. I was motivated and inspired to come up with an idea after joining Amy’s from Atta Girl Say’s Christmas Porch Blog Tour. While I’m not sharing a porch idea, I hope our outdoor Christmas look inspires you to create something in your outdoor living space. Be sure to check out the beautiful Christmas porches and outdoor ideas from this blog hop down below.
Outdoor Christmas Decorations
The main goal for decorating The W was to find outdoor Christmas decorations to continue my modern boho style. However, with limited time and our country’s current status, I had to rethink my idea. I am going with more of shabby chic meets moderns with a side of boho mixed in the middle for this year’s look.
Lots of greenery
An easy way to decorate any space is to add lots of greenery. From plants to garland, it can make a space pop with little effort. I added fresh garland to the gazebo, pergola, at the top of the stairs, movie projector, and side fence.
I also picked up several small trees and placed them around the deck area. We will plant them around our property after the holiday season.
Mini Christmas Tree Farm idea
We used our mostly empty garden beds and created a little Christmas Tree Farm. I added lights around the beds to help create a festive look. You can still some arugula growing in one of the garden beds.
This mini Christmas tree farm idea not only added color to a dead area but helped give this outdoor space a festive vibe. It’s SO cute!
Outdoor Christmas Boho Vibe
Our wicker chairs are usually the showstopper, bringing the boho vibe to our backyard living space. Before I put them up for the winter, they’re doing one last hurrah for the holiday season.
In each chair, I added a cozy blanket + throw pillow. Garland drapes one arm of each chair with a red ball garland placed on top.
After adding a cozy white blanket to the second wicker chair, I added a merry candle holder picked up from an antique store a few years ago and placed four red and white candles in it.
Life-Sized Nutcrackers were a must.
I completed the stairs with additional garland + lights, pillows, and red candle lanterns. On my wish list this year, I wanted to find a few life-sized nutcrackers. Sam’s Club is one of the few stores with Black life-sized Nutcrackers. They are out of stock but on my bucket list for next year.
I was able to score these life-sized nutcrackers on Black Friday, and they are 68 inches, light up, and play music. Thankfully, there is an option to turn off the music but still have the nutcracker light up. Whew! Your neighbors will thank you for this feature.
These nutcrackers are made of plastic and were budget-friendly. Life-size outdoor nutcrackers are hard to find. However, check the following stores: Walmart, Sam’s Club, Michael’s, Home Goods, and search online.
Outdoor Christmas Tree
This year’s outdoor Christmas Tree is decorated with red and white ornaments. There’s a mix of boho style ornaments and Rae Dunn ornaments. Instead of using a tree collar, I wrapped the trunk in artificial snow and put a few gift decorations in front. More of the fake snow was added to the flower bed that attaches the two decks.
Hot cocoa stand
This Christmas space wouldn’t be complete without adding a little hot cocoa station. Using pieces from my Rae Dunn Christmas collection, along with this hot cocoa sign I picked up last year from Kirkland’s, this hot cocoa station is ready for the season. (Note: these items are not made for the outdoors and will be stored when not in use.)
Pro-tip: Interested in collecting Rae Dunn items? Be sure to read my guide on where to find Rae Dunn items, including making them yourself.
Decorating our outdoor space for Christmas
I purchased a tree from Lowe’s and used ornaments I already had on hand for the small deck. This black outdoor bar cart (which usually holds all the grill stuff) came in handy for this space. I found the log holder at Marshall’s, and it’s a cute addition to this shabby chic theme. The shrub tree, like the others, will be planted around our property after the holiday season.
I decorated the bar cart with gorgeous garland, pinecones, a small Nutcracker, a red ball garland, and a few Rae Dunn Christmas pieces.
This Christmas bar cart might be my favorite thing out of this whole look. It’s the mix of the fresh greenery against the black bar cart with hints of red and gold for me. And with the boho rug, along with the rustic lanterns on one side and wrapping paper on the other, it just says, this space is ready for Christmas.
With a fire in our handmade fire pit (we’re using a solo stove insert), this space is ready for Christmas. Imagine a warm cup of homemade hot cocoa in your hand, warming yourself by the fire, while you watch your favorite Christmas movie on the big screen. If the weather stays around 45 degrees (or above) this season, you might find us hanging back here, doing that very thing.
The one magical thing missing from this space is snow.
Are you planning to decorate your outdoor space for the holiday season? If so, I hope this post has inspired you to think big or small. Keep it simple or go over the top. And when in doubt, just add a ton of fresh greenery around your space. You can’t go wrong!

You have truly inspired me! I love The W every season, but it’s really magical at Christmas. I can’t pick a favorite detail! You have me wanting to decorate our patio! I love that you chose items that can withstand a harsher winter. I feel like people think you can only decorate your outdoor space if you live in a more temperate climate. You’ve shown that’s not the case.
