Unique travel destinations are one of my favorite things to find and enjoy. Last year, we visited the KOA Port Huron campground and discovered it is a one of a kind destination in our home state. For a lot of people, camping doesn’t sound all that glamorous, but this KOA campground made what could be a “roughing it” getaway into a relaxing location with plenty of amenities.
Why Choose KOA Port Huron in Kimball, Michigan
It’s no secret I’m not a huge fan of traditional camping. Sure, we’ve camped in our SUV in the past, but it’s not my preferred way of having fun in the great outdoors. Comfortable sleep, running water, and a lack of mosquitos buzzing and biting me is a priority for me when going somewhere, especially when traveling. So, when I heard of KOA Port Huron, I was a bit dubious. Sure, it’s in a beautiful part of Michigan, but would it be comfortable enough for more than an overnight stay? Not only that, traveling with three teenage boys (almost men), means our family needs space.
I was not just pleasantly surprised but truly became enamored of this great location to stop and get in tune with nature, enjoy the beauty of the Great Lakes State, and feel disconnected from the outside world.
KOA Port Huron is More Resort and Less Campground
There is nothing wrong with popping a tent and camping out on the ground. In the past, we’ve all enjoyed it. However, as we get older and the boys start to turn into young men, we’re spoiled. Our type of camping means a cabin with regular beds. Although Derrick and Zayd’n are still fans of traditional camping, the rest of the family is over it. Pulling into this KOA destination, you are immediately shown that while a rustic setting, it’s still more resort-style than a campground.
Room with a set of bunk beds; our twin teens slept here.
Loft area where our youngest teen slept.
Sitting area, which also pulls out for sleeping.
Our cabin was cute and cozy. It has the rustic feel of a cabin, but comfortable with lots of modern touches. Our cabin has a room with a set of bunk beds, another room with a queen-size bed, and a loft. The loft holds additional mattresses, and it’s a great place for the kids to sleep or for an older child who may want a little privacy. Each cabin has a small kitchenette with a full-size fridge and one bathroom. Hot running water is essential for our family when we camp. Learn more about the cabin we stayed in! You have the choice of pulling in your RV, putting up a tent on a campsite or staying in one of the tiny house style cabins. That isn’t where it ends, though.
It’s cool that the term camping is different for each person and each family. If you’re a fan of RVs, today’s models will give you the feel of home away from home. While we were there, we explored some of the RVs from GoRVing, and I was impressed. From full-sized refrigerators and quality interiors, and so many luxury options, I could travel like this. It’s been on our bucket list for years to embark on a cross-country trip to the Grand Canyon in an RV. And while I’ve been hesitant to do it, exploring Montana showed me I could travel with all the comforts of home.

Amenities and more Amenities
This isn’t a “plug into electric and rough it” location. You have not just one, but two pools, an arcade, miniature golf, basketball court, a fully stocked gift shop, and the often elusive when camping, WiFi on site. When I plan family vacations, I have to think about what amenities are there for teens to do? Once we unpacked our cabin for the weekend, we headed out to explore. Before our trip, I visited the KOA’s website to learn about all the things you can do. There’s so much to do on this campground; even the teens found something to do!
From bike rentals, shuffleboard to pools, this KOA has it all. This is what sets KOAs apart from regular camping sites. And, every KOA is not identical. Each KOA may offer their own set of unique attractions and amenities. You could find our boys on the basketball court, talking smack while they tripled-teamed their dad on the shuffleboard court and driving the golf cart around the campground. There’s a daily schedule of camp activities to do, so your kids can get their fair share of tye-dying and other camp activities.
Then each night, you can’t go without having a bonfire and S’mores. Each cabin and campsite has a dedicated firepit.
However, if you’re traveling with friends and family, you can rent the pavilion for more space. You’ll also find laundry facilities, a gym, and so much more at this KOA.
Ideal for a Romantic Getaway or a Family Vacation
While this is most definitely a family-friendly KOA campground, that doesn’t mean you can’t use a cabin and the beauty of the area for a quiet romantic getaway. Couples trips are a wonderful way to keep the spark alive in a marriage. There is nothing like bundling up next to a bonfire and roasting a few marshmallows under the stars to inspire romance. Even with kids and families on the go around you, the comfort of this location lends itself to the quiet time away you need. Check out all the things you can do in the Port Huron area.
Great for Families Looking to Disconnect
For families, it’s a perfect “all in one” destination. You have the great outdoors and beauty of Michigan just outside the door. Next to your cabin or campsite, you also have dozens of ways to entertain kids who feel the need to be on the go. This is especially nice if your family often stays connected to electronics. Sure, you can still enjoy those with the on-site WiFiFi, but the number of options in the campground for fun keeps that as the last option on your list.
Kids will love that KOA Port Huron has large pools, fun local mining activities, large areas to roam and play, games with other campers, miniature golf, and even disc golf! There are dozens of ways to stay busy all day long.

KOA Port Huron Hosts Themed Events
If you don’t want to be bothered by planning every bit of your trip but still want to have a theme or itinerary, then you will love the themed weekend options. When talking to the owner, he shared the many themed activities they do on the weekends. Halloween is huge at this KOA, so if you’re thinking about visiting in October, you may want to reserve your spot as soon as it opens up. This KOA location hosts weekend events for everything from honoring military servicemen and women, to a Disney themed weekend. They even have a summer event dedicated to Outer Space and aliens.
There is truly something on their event list for everyone in your family. Take a look at this year’s options and find one that suits your family, or maybe even a few for multiple getaways! With travel being limited this year, camping sounds ideal. Not only can you still have enough space to keep a distance, but it will give your family a change of scenery and tons of fun things to do.
