Being a hero is not just for the people in comic books or on T.V. Everyday heroes are all around us, including ourselves. We’re sharing ways you can be a hero in your community, as well as our version of a Hero Sandwich inspired by the SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE movie available now on Digital, Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD. ”This post is sponsored by Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”.
Everyday Heroes | Spider-Verse Hero Sandwich
Have you watched SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE movie? It’s currently my most favorite Spidey movie ever! Why? Well, because it resonated with me on so many levels. I mean, don’t get me wrong I like the original Peter Parker well enough, but as an African-American, Miles was undoubtedly a lot more relatable.
Miles’ youthful awkwardness felt a bit more like my youthful awkwardness way back when. His father, mother, uncle, music, cool, swag, and general presence was so much more accessible and tangible in a way that the previous Spider-Man movies could not be. In a nutshell, diversity matters. It truly does.
The best Spidey movie: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Watching Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse with my boys was a lot of fun. We vibed over the music and also invested a lot of feels as we watched Miles struggle to rise to the occasion in spite of so many obstacles, fear, and feelings of self-doubt and uncertainty.
“It was amazing. The animation was incredible. It was the best Spider-Man movie, ever. I could identify with Miles. Not just because he was an African-American (and with the same hair), but he was struggling with moving to a new school, relationship issues with his family, and stepping into his powers. I am Miles.” – Ziah
“My favorite part of the movie was when he could control his powers. And when his dad started talking to him through the door.” – Zayd’n
“It was pretty good. I related to the part where Miles was struggling to adapt to a new school and new teachers.” – Zion
After watching this movie, the biggest take away from the latest Spider-Man movie was feeling inspired. Feeling like no matter what, you can ‘wear the mask’ and do incredible things. Both big and small acts of heroism matter.
What is a hero?
What does a hero look like to you? You may be surprised to learn that everyday heroes can have an origin story similar to our own. Heroes come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and creeds.
“A hero can be anybody. Somebody that’s brave; to do something that other people won’t do.” – Zayd’n
“A hero is someone that is important. Impactful to someone or something.”- Zion
“A hero is someone that means a lot to you. That person that can save you in any type of way, and is loyal, brave, and a good leader. They will also risk themselves for you.” – Ziah
We sat down as a family to discuss things we could do to be an everyday hero
As parents, we encourage our boys to give back to their community. By volunteering, our boys are learning invaluable life lessons revolving around caring for others and compassion. Each of our boys has selected an organization in which they can volunteer a couple of times a week, and it has made a tremendous impact on how they see the world. Because it’s not always about money, but taking the time out to genuinely, and selflessly extend a helping hand to others, and doing so without the expectation of getting anything in return.
Here are some ideas they came up with on how anyone (especially their peers) can be an everyday hero.
- Helping out a friend (or stranger) who is struggling.
- Volunteering at a place in the community that resonates with you.
- Being kind and supportive to friends, family, and people you don’t know.
- Donate money to your favorite charities.
- Pick up litter on the streets and around the community.
- Show appreciation to your parents, friends, teachers, people around you.
- Stick up for kids that are being bullied.
- Help the teacher pick up the room at the end of the day.
- Give others food. Donating to a local food pantry.
- Helping friends study for exams.
- Volunteering at the Animal Shelter.
- Picking a family to give them a Christmas basket and gifts.
- Sending someone a card to let them know you are thinking about them.
But regardless of how you are a hero to others, every hero needs something good to eat! That’s where our classic extra mega delicious Spider-Verse Hero Sandwich comes in.
Building our Hero sandwich together was so much fun because every parent should pass on good memories and this one was one of them.

Being a hero doesn’t take much. We all have a mask, a hero within us that can be activated at any time when we hear the call. Sometimes, that hero can be as simple as being a mom or a dad, raising three boys to become kind and impactful members of society.
