Incredibles 2 is out! During our “Incredibles 2” press junket, we sat down with Sarah Vowel and Huck Milner to talk about their characters, Violet and Dash.
Sibling Fun with Violet + Dash Parr (Sarah Vowel + Huck Milner)
Here’s a little about each character:
VIOLET PARR (voice of Sarah Vowell), the firstborn of the Parr clan, is an introverted and intelligent 14-year-old teen that doesn’t quite fit in with the normal crowd. Socially awkward, outspoken and sarcastic, Violet plays her teenager role to perfection—all while secretly mastering her superpowers of invisibility and creating force fields. A Super at heart, Violet can’t help her urge to fight crime alongside her family.
HE’S GOT THIS – Bob Parr aka Mr. Incredible attempts his most heroic feat yet: spearheading life at home with Violet, Dash and baby Jack-Jack, whose super powers are about to be discovered by his family. DASHIELL PARR (voice of Huckleberry “Huck” Milner) is a 10-year-old boy—restless, relentless, curious—with the remarkable power of super speed. Dash sports a hearty sense of adventure and a boundless supply of energy. He’d love nothing more than to show off his special skills and fight a few bad guys along the way—and doesn’t understand why he has to keep his powers a secret.

Introducing Huck Milner (the voice of “Dash Parr”)
You may notice one major change in Incredibles 2 compared to the first Incredibles movie. The voice of Dash Parr changed to a new actor- Huck Milner. He was already a fan of Disney Pixar’s Incredibles movie, noting that Dash and Flash are his favorite superheroes.
Hailing from New York, Huck shared with us on what it was like to be in this film. “ It was really fun. Brad Bird made it fun, and he just made everything fun, and it was amazing.”
Huck went on to tell us, if he had a superpower, it would be speed. “I’m slow in real life. I cannot beat my cousins or my sisters at any game involving running. And I wanna be able to go somewhere and then just come back and be like I was here the whole time.”
This was Huck’s first movie premiere, and here’s what he had to say about it, “Overwhelming, a lot of it was. But I thought it was pretty fun, and the party afterward was really fun. And seeing the movie and listening to everyone’s reactions and laughing, and it was fun to be in the giant theater with everyone.”
Huck already has one of the Incredibles dolls with his voice, which has to be kinda cool. I would love to have a doll with my voice coming out of it. I don’t know if my kids and husband would agree, but that would be so cool! When asked how many times he has pressed the button to hear his voice, he said, “a lot of times!” Spoken like a true boy! LOL

I should interject, that this question came from Sarah ( a natural journalist), which then Huck goes, “I thought they were supposed to ask the questions.”
The room erupted into laughter. This was the playful back and forth banter we got from Huck and Sarah during our interview with them. It came naturally since they play brother and sister. It was also sweet to see how Sarah worked with Huck on answering some of the questions and prompting him when needed. Their sibling rilvary reminded me of my boys!

A voice we know well – Sarah Vowell (voice of “Violet Parr”)
It was interesting to interview a journalism/actor. Many of you may recognize Sarah’s voice from NPR. Well, that’s how she got involved with Pixar, because of her voice. And before I explain that story, I loved that even with being part of a highly successful franchise, she was down to earth. She didn’t come to this press junket dressed in high heels, makeup and trying to fit into Hollywood. She has stayed true to who she is, and that spoke volumes to me.
Anyways, Brad Bird (writer/director) was listening to NPR in his car and heard one of Sarah’s documentaries. He later told her, “was so taken with the gravitas and maturity of my voice that he made me into a junior high — he heard a junior high school student who becomes a superhero in that.”
Sarah was asked how did it feel stepping back into the role of Violet. “I mean she and I sound a lot alike, so there’s that. And Brad and I became friends in the first film. And some of the other people who work behind the scenes. So, I have kept in touch with everybody. I would just go there just to have lunch with them sometimes. So, I was perfectly happy to just, you know, move into another room and get paid to be there.”
She also went on to talk about once you become that character, you ARE that character. She leaned over to Huck and said, “you will learn this, Huck — you are Dash until you die.”
When asked what superpower would she want, her answer was quite funny, but so-down-to-earth, “As a middle-aged lady, I would love super strength, because I don’t know if any of you have like those rubber jar opener things.”

As we were wrapping up our interview, a question was asked what Sarah and Huck thought about the message/theme in this particular movie.
“That is the storyline for a while, and that’s interesting (referring to Elastigirl working and Mr. Incredible staying at home). And I find that compelling politically but also hilarious, because he is just trying to reign in his jealousy.”
She also went on to add, “By the end when they’re all working together, I mean the goal, I would say culturally for us as a society, is maybe everyone gets to become the person they’re supposed to be, and they all get to be who they are equally and they all work together. And each of their individual powers, you know, using those collectively for the greater good. Like, to me like that is an exciting, functional society where everyone gets to do that.”
I thought this was pretty profound, especially on how everything is politically and culturally right now in our country. At the end of the day, the goal is to work together, collectively for the greater good.
