15-Day Spring Cleaning Challenge + printable checklist
As I figure out how to make spring get here in Michigan, I’m also putting together my spring cleaning list. Confession: I am somewhat of an OCD/neat-freak, so my spring cleaning may be a little extra. However, as a busy working mom, I don’t have hours each day to spend on spring cleaning. I like to tackle my spring cleaning a little each day.
If you’re a person that dreads doing spring cleaning, don’t have enough time in the day to devote to these tedious tasks, or don’t want to do it, I have a challenge for you. Over the next 15 days (you can start when it fits into your schedule), try doing a little bit each day until the job is done.
What is spring cleaning? It’s mostly defined as a time to clean the places in your house that you may not clean on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. However, I’m here to change the way you think about spring cleaning. If you take the time to do some of those tedious tasks on a weekly or monthly basis, your work during the spring cleaning season will be easy. Seriously, it will be.
The kitchen and the bathrooms are the two rooms in my house that seem to stay dirty. Well, my boys’ rooms also leave a lot to be desired, but that’s another story.
Tips for a successful spring cleaning challenge.
- Block this time out. Put it on your calendar. Set a timer to remind you. If you put this task off, you will not be successful.
- Change the way you think. It has to be done. And think about it- when you’re done, you will have a clean house.
- Decide on how much time you can spend on spring cleaning for the next 15 days.
- Put together a spring cleaning playlist of your favorite songs. I don’t know about you, but in my house, when the gospel music started playing on a Saturday morning, we knew what that meant. It was cleaning time. LOL
- Head to Walmart to get all of your cleaning supplies, including Soft Scrub® products (like their new Soft Scrub® Alpine Fresh Duo Cubes), as well as a toilet rim cleaner, and I like to get their Soft Scrub® Cleanser with Bleach for the kitchen and bathroom. My mom always brought this brand of cleanser growing up, because it got the job done. It’s a familiar face, and I like to continue using brands I grew up with, knowing if it was good to use back then- it’s still good to use now.
- Enlist help. Every man, woman, boy, and girl can pitch in and help check off items on the spring cleaning list.
- Have fun! Yes, have fun. It’s a task that has to be done, so why not make the best of it?!
Use our printable spring cleaning challenge list to help you stay on task and focused. And while you’re saving time by using our printable checklist, you can also save money with this Soft Scrub Ibotta offer (valid until 5/8/2018).
How to complete your spring cleaning in 15 days
Day 1 + 2 = Tackle your bedrooms. Depending on the age of your children, you may have to pitch in to help them with some of the heavy lifting (like dusting the corner walls, tops of shelves, top of windows, etc.). Also, spend time cleaning out your closets and drawers. I typically spend 1-2 hours cleaning my bedroom. Don’t forget to dust all the corners, the ceiling fan, vacuum or sweep, clean underneath the beds, and wash all linen. This tasks used to take 3-4 days. But now that my boys are old enough to clean out their own closets, dust, etc., I just oversee their cleaning.
Day 3= Let’s spend time in the bathroom. For the first day, you will clean out the medicine cabinets and storage. You will get rid of any expired items, and declutter this area.
Day 4= Back in the bathroom. Now is a great time to get out the Soft Scrub Cleanser with Bleach and put it to work. Clean the shower and tub, toss the shower curtain into the washer, wipe down the shower walls, clean the toilet, and any other bathroom surfaces (like the sink and fixtures) sweep and mop the floor. One tip on keeping your toilet clean: buy a few Soft Scrub® Alpine Fresh Duo Cubes. This is a great way to maintain the freshness and cleanliness of your toilet bowl down to the last flush. (The duo cubes last up to four weeks.) You can also use a fresh Soft Scrub® Alpine Fresh Rim Hanger to help keep your toilet fresh and clean (You will want to place this where water flow is strongest in your toilet).
Day 5= Entryway. Sweep or vacuum your entryway. Wash down the walls. Toss out anything that is cluttering this area (old coats, shoes that no longer fit, old sports equipment, etc.). If you have carpeted stairs, consider getting them, and the floors with carpet in your home, professionally cleaned.
Day 6= Clean the laundry room. This includes wiping down the inside and outside of the washer and dryer. Sweep and dust the corners and wipe down the walls. This is also a good time to clean out the pet area, including washing all of their toys.
Day 7= Living Room. Dust every nook and cranny. Wash or have the rugs cleaned. Wipe down electronics, including behind the T.V. and game consoles. Clean walls and light fixtures. If you have curtains, wash them or dust the blinds.
Don’t forget, in every room to wipe down the baseboards.
Day 8= Clean other rooms. If you have an office, craft room, etc., don’t forget to clean those rooms as thoroughly as you cleaned the bedrooms.
The next six days will be spent in the kitchen. You may not think you need to spend that much time deep-cleaning your kitchen, but there are many things people forget to think about it when it comes to cleaning this space.
Day 9= Clean the inside of the dishwasher, your stove top, oven doors, and behind the stove.
Day 10= Wipe down all the cabinets. Clean off the top of the cabinets. And if your cabinets have legs, be sure to clean underneath them. Also, this is the ideal time to clean out the cabinets. Toss out old food and chipped dishes.
Day 11= Clean the garbage can, inside and out. Clean the outside of the microwave. Clean other small kitchen appliances.
Day 12= Clean and wipe down the outside of your fridge. Clean out the inside of your refrigerator. Toss out expired food, old vegetables, and double check all dairy products.
Day 13= Clean the spice rack/seasonings. If you have a pantry, it’s a great time to wipe it down and toss out expired food.
Day 14= Change filters (coffee-maker, microwave, range hood, fridge). This is also a great time to change the batteries in your smoke detector. Depending on big your kitchen is, you may need to spend some extra time continuing to scrub kitchen tables, kitchen chairs, utensil holder, kitchen shelves, etc.
Day 15= Clean the sink/garbage disposal. Wipe down all counters and kitchen walls. Sweep and mop the floor.
That’s it. You made it! Congratulations!
As you may notice, I didn’t include items like cleaning the garage, the basement, and the attic. These are rooms where a lot of the junk from your house gets dumped. Knowing that my time is limited, I would need a weekend alone to tackle our garage. However, you can break up the same tasks for the garage or the basement, as I did above, and get it cleaned in about 15 days.
