Every relationship requires some work here and there and special nights alone together are a key to success, but with the holidays fast approaching and budgets tight (and learning how to survive when you’re broke) it’s time to start searching for free and inexpensive ideas. Here are 5 FREE Winter Date Night Ideas sure to give you something to do with that special someone without breaking the bank or taking money from the kids Christmas fund this year.
5 Free Winter Date Night Ideas
- BUILD A BONFIRE: If you live in a rural area, winter is the perfect time of year to gather up some branches and build a bonfire out back. Snuggle together in sleeping bags next to the fire and enjoy the flickering light, heat from the fire and some romance under the stars. If the temperatures are warm enough plan a night camping out next to the fire. Bring your favorite campfire snacks or foods to share and a battery powered radio out to play some great music.
- GO CAMPING INDOORS: If you live in an area where the bonfire outside is a bit too cold due to snow and lower temperatures take it indoors and set up camp in your living room in front of the fireplace. Set up an air mattress and warm blankets in front of your fireplace and spend the evening talking, listening to your favorite love songs and of course getting the wire hangers out with hot dogs and marshmallows for your very own indoor camp out with fun foods and romance. Hot chocolate, spiced tea or apple cider heated over an open fire (inside or out) can be fun and soothing and a great way to get back to the basics of your relationship. {Get a S’more Kit}
- MAKE CANDY: If it is close to the holidays, get in the kitchen together and create your favorite childhood homemade candies. Whip up his moms best fudge recipe or recreate your own favorite homemade peanut butter balls. Work alongside each other making sure to feed each other bits of chocolate as it cooks. Turn up the Christmas music and dance together in the kitchen with flour, sugar and cocoa all over. Have fun and play like you did when you first met.
- SING KARAOKE: Head out to a local pub for Karaoke night. Most don’t require purchases or if they do a simple drink will suffice. Order a Diet Coke and watch others get on stage and sing to the classics or head up on stage for a rowdy rendition of “your song” or a favorite duet by classic artists. Laugh at each others mistakes, dance while others sing and above all connect on a fun carefree level that is often missing with kids and work responsibilities looming overhead.
- CREATE AN AT HOME MOVIE MARATHON: Did you go to a movie together for your first date? Do you have a series of movies or a specific genre that you both really love to watch? Create an at home movie marathon by downloading or grabbing your favorite movies from your own collection (or check the local library for free rental) and snuggling together in bed or on the couch for an evening “at the movies”. You can even create a DIY date night movie basket. Pop popcorn, make a homemade pizza and stock up on your favorite snacks and drinks. Find date night movie ideas!
Whatever you choose to do together this winter make it a point to routinely spend quality time alone to reconnect. Budgets may not always allow you to have child care for these free winter date night ideas, but as you can see many of them are things you can easily do after the kids are all tucked into bed for the night. Schedule the time on your calendar and don’t let anything take that time away from you. Your relationship is far more important than how pretty a present is wrapped, how many snickerdoodle cookies are made and packed for the office party or what has been posted by your friends on social media today.

I really cannot think of the last time my husband and I went on a date. With 9 kids it’s really hard to find a sitter and there isn’t that much room in our small house to do anything without waking up the kids.
